South Africa

Location - southern-most tip of Africa, bordering Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.

Population - 44 million

Capital Cities - Pretoria (administrative), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial)

President - Thabo Mbeki

Life Expectancy - 42

Main Religion - Christian.

Official Languages - Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Xhosa, Zulu, Sotho, Sesotho, Setswana, SiSwati, Tshivenda, Xisonga

Profile - South Africa is a very beautiful country with many diverse cultures. Apartheid (separating people of different races) ended in 1994 and the country is working towards reducing racial barriors. It received it's independance from Britain in 1910. There is a very high crime rate in South Africa. There is also the highest rate of HIV/AIDs infection in the world. Poverty and unemployment are high and many live on the streets. The people are very open to the gospel and there is a much higher percentage of Christians there than there are in England.
